Ibai takes caster's curse to the next level
The renowned Spanish League of Legends caster made a desperate decision to prevent the EU LCS finals from ending with a simple 3-0
The caster's curse is an endemic problem in the sportcasting profession that has been reported for years. It consists in that during a live broadcast the commentator praises or describes the qualities of a player or a team and, Immediately after, said player or team fails and throws the argument of the caster overboard.
Obviously, this fact is nothing particularly strange because it is a product of mere statistics. Hundreds of hours of League of Legends - and many other more competitions - are broadcast weekly. It is only a matter of time to wait for the commentator to articulate a sentence and the situation to not go along. In addition, whenever the "caster's curse" is referenced, it is always in a humorous manner.
However, Ibai Llanos is different. In the third game of the EU LCS finals, G2 Esports was having a considerable advantage and was threatening to end the encounter with a 3-0 in the best of five. Being aware that there could be very little time left for the end and wanting to see more hours of gameplay, the young Basque commentator devised a plan for Unicorns of Love to comeback: publicly assume the victory of G2 before the game ended with the hope that that would jinx them.
Translation: "G2 European champion for the third consecutive time."
It seemed a desperate move, but this couldn't be further from the truth. More than 22,000 viewers who were following the live broadcast in Spanish were amazed to see that a few seconds later the unicorns began a teamfight that they would eventually win and would lead to the assassination of Baron Nashor. The caster's curse materialized and the pink team would destroy the nexus of the samurais.
Despite this being a coincidence, the timing was so fortunate that it has caused furor in social networks. Ibai would not have the opportunity to apply the same strategy for the next game because he was substituted in his position so that he could rest his voice. He himself would later tweet: "Without my blessing UOL can't win."
The final would end this way with a 3 to 1 victory in favor of G2 Esports, who have been crowned for the third consecutive time as champions of Europe and will represent the region in the Mid-Season Invitational in Brazil.
