Colorado vs. Portland; the coldest match in MLS history

The doors of Dick's Sporting Goods Park opened for the game between the Colorado Rapids and Portland Timbers runner-up of the 2018 season.

A game expected to have many goals and suffer a bit with the cold, which became the understatement of the day as their first encounter in the 2019 season will go down in the history of the league.

The game that started at 6:00 pm ET, was filled with fans from Colorado wrapped in jackets and gloves as the weather was at 18°F at start becoming the coldest game in the league's history in regular and postseason.

Portland led the game, and the three points seemed to be for the away team, but Andre Shinyashiki tied the score at the end of the game, getting each side one point.

Games with the lowest temperature record

Two games had the lowest temperature record in the MLS, before Saturday's match between Colorado and Portland, both games played at 19°F, both were between Minnesota United and Atlanta United at the TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The first was during Atlanta United's season debut in the MLS, held on March 12, 2017, at home of Minnesota United, the game ended with a 6-1 victory for 'The Five Stripes.'

The second match was on March 31, 2018, with an Atlanta United victory too, although this time ended 1-0, a game in which 'The Five Stripes played with 10 men for about 60 minutes.
