El español Rafa Nadal, número 3 del mundo, arrancó su camino en el Masters 1.000 de Roma con un trabajado triunfo por 7-5 y 6-4 ante el italiano Jannik Sinner, número 18 del ranking. Fue un partido disputado, con grandes puntos y con alternativas en el marcados, pero la experiencia y calidad del balear resolvieron la papeleta.

Nadal, nueve veces campeón en Roma, tardó dos horas y diez minutos para doblegar a Sinner y tuvo que recuperar una rotura de desventaja tanto en la primera como la segunda manga. Su rival en octavos de final será el canadiense Shapovalov.
