Croacia debutó en el Mundial de Rusia con triunfo ante Nigeria por dos goles a cero. Etebo en propia puerta y Luka Modric de penalti terminaron decantando el encuentro. 

Tras el empate de Argentina e Islandia, Croacia se sitúa al frente del grupo D.
