Federer's gesture to Nadal: "I sent him a text to see if he was ok"

After beating Tomáš Berdych, Roger Federer spared a thought for Rafa Nadal who was forced to quit the Australian Open after picking a leg injury during the fifth set of his quarter-final tie against Marin Čilić yesterday. The crowd at the Rod Laver Arena applauded his gesture.

“We wish him well. It’s hard to watch you know? That someone goes out after five sets and not being able to finish… all credit to the other guy. Still I think Marin deserves an amazing amount of credit because he hung around and he fought realy, really hard and I don’t think he’d ever beaten Rafa before so this was a… he beat him once but this was a massive win for him and I wrote Rafa a message late last night before I went to bed, it was the last thing I did. I was like, ‘I’ve got to write to Rafa and see how he’s doing and I hope he was going to be ok with the scan today and I’m happy that the news is not terrible. But it was not nice to see – my fellow rival and friend go out like that, so I wish him well”.
