However, the New York City captain's club form has impressed Julen Lopetegui, with the Spain coach including the 35-year-old in his squad for World Cup qualifiers against Italy and Liechtenstein.
On his last start for Spain, against Australia at Brazil 2014, Villa found the net to take his tally for his country to 59 goals in 97 games, making him La Roja's top scorer of all time ahead of Raúl.
