Very Arguable Refereeing as VAR strikes again at Under-20s
The VAR system is being used at the Under-20 World Cup to iron out further wrinkles but a decision against Italy highlights the issues it faces.
Italy recovered from going a goal and a man down to beat Zambia 3-2 in extra time and set up an Under-20 World Cup semi-final against England on Monday despite further controversy courtesy of the VAR system.
After Patson Daka has put Zambia ahead in Suwon, South Korea Giuseppe Pezzella was sent off following a video review just before half-time, despite replays showing that the Italy defender made little or no contact with Edward Chilufya.
After awarding a penalty, the match referee reversed his decision after consulting the video assistant referee and yet still dismissed Pezzella in another incident that does little to advance the case for VAR across all levels of football.
