The other Madrid-Atlético European semi-final in 1958-59
Real Madrid and Atlético last met at the last four stage in Europe almost 60 years ago. The game was forced into a playoff round with Real victorious.
Real Madrid and city rivals Atlético were drawn together in the Champions League semi-finals on Friday, the first time the two sides have met at that stage in Europe since 1959.
In that season the clubs faced off with the scores tied at 2-2 after the two legs, in the days before away goals counted. Enrique Collar was the hero for Atleti, scoring the only goal of the return leg after Héctor Rial and Ferenc Puskas had put Real ahead in the opening game.
Collar again found the net in the third encounter, a playoff on a neutral ground in Zaragoza's La Romareda. But Alfredo di Stéfano and Puskas combined to put Real through in a 2-1 victory, with Los Blancos going on to beat Stade Reims in the final.
