Fernando Torres talks us through his first goal at the Bernabéu
Fernando Torres remembers his first goal for Atlético against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu. It came in his second spell at the club in January 2015.
Out of the 114 goals he has scored wearing Atlético's red and white jersey, Fernando Torres had handpicked his favourite nine - among them is the first goal he scored, at least in official competition, at the Santiago Bernabéu - something he didn't manage in any of the five years of his first stint at Atlético*.
Torres relives first official goal for Atlético at the Bernabéu
Curiously, on returning to the Calderón after six months on loan at AC Milan in January 2015, El Niño bagged a brace in Chamartín in the Copa del Rey Last 16 return leg - his first game back with Atleti. He describes his opening goal from that match:
“Now we’re going to watch my first goal in an Atlético de Madrid shirt, on my return [from Milan] in the Santiago Bernabéu in the Copa del Rey – the game couldn’t have started better for us, this was in the first minute. Here’s we see some great movement from Griezmann, who sprints past Madrid’s full-back. When he looks up, he puts over a cross – actually quite a slow cross which had Sergio Ramos wrong-footed. Then the most complicated part of the move which is the connection with my left foot – where I try to place the ball inside Keylor Navas’ top corner. Technically it’s a difficult finish as the ball is bouncing and behind me and the hard part is knowing when and where to stop to be able to strike the ball, and in this case, with my weaker foot, hit an angled shot past the keeper. I hope you enjoyed it!”
'Two years in hell' and friendly meetings with Real Madrid
*Torres spent his first two seasons at Atlético when the club was in the Second Division and only met Real Madrid in official competiton after the team had gained promotion back to the top flight in 2002. He did take part in a handful of pre-season friendlies between the two Madrid and found the net in one of them - the Trofeo Madrid contest, at the Bernabéu on 2 January 2002.
