Luis Suárez joins Messi and Ronaldo in the 40+ club
The South American hitman became just the third player to score 40 or more goals in a single La Liga season. Any guesses who the other two might be?
Luis Suárez finished the 2015-16 La Liga season as the top scorer. The Uruguayan notched up 40 goals and provided 16 assists during his 35 appearances in the Spanish top-flight.
On the 20th of April he found the back of the net four times at Riazor as Barça subjected Deportivo de La Coruña to a 0-8 drubbing. His goalscoring exploits in Galicia saw him overtake Ronaldo’s best of 48 goals in a single season for Barcelona.
“It is a privilege when you think about what Ronaldo means to Barcelona and to the world. I am trying to enjoy playing for the best team in the world. As I said, it is an honour to beat one of the best players in the world".
Suárez has become only the third player to surpass the 40-goal mark in a single La Liga campaign, after Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Andrés Iniesta on the former Liverpool marksman: “His season has been superb, both because he was the top scorer and because of all the work he has done for the team. I hope this continues for several more years. That would be great for the team and the club”.
Los Culés clinched the league title (the 24th in the club’s history) on matchday 38 at Los Carmenes with a 3-0 win over Granada. Suárez scored all three goals.
“These goals were special because they gave us the title. But in reality it’s due to every goal the team scored. We have to recognise our effort and the pressure we managed in the last few weeks, despite some people wanting us to fail”.
