The pelotón pays homage to Michele Scarponi
Ahead of the Liege-Bastogne-Liege race in Belgium the pelotón held a minute's applause for the 2011 Giro winner, who died in a road accident on Saturday.
Cycling paid its respects to Michele Scarponi, who was killed in a collision while out training for the Giro near his home in Italy, ahead of the Liege-Bastogne-Liege race on Sunday.
The 37-year-old, who won the Giro in 2011, was a popular figure among his peers and the eventual winner of the race, Alejandro Valverde, dedicated the win to his colleague.
"This win is for Michele Scarponi. He was a good friend of mine," said an emotional Valverde. "It hurts to think he's gone, I'll miss him. I'll give all my prize money from this victory to his family. This win is also dedicated to him."
