David Villa bagged a brace for New York City in a 2-2 draw against Columbus Crew as his side booked their place in the MLS Cup semifinals in the last round of league fixtures.

The Spain striker, who was called up to the last La Roja squad by Julen Lopetegui, could have had a second hat-trick of his MLS career but saw his stoppage time penalty saved by Columbus keeper Zack Steffen.

Named MVP last season, Villa's 22 goals in 31 games in the regular season has him among the front-runners to claim a second individual award in 2017. NYCFC await the winners of the knock-out round game between New York Red Bulls and Chicago Fire in their conference playoff semifinal.
