La infraestructura de los equipos de Corea del Sur ha sido señalada tradicionalmente como uno de los factores clave para explicar su dominio en League of Legends. Aunque no cabe duda de que hay jugadores coreanos cuya habilidad es indescriptible, la cultura, disciplina y experiencia de este país en lo concerniente a los deportes electrónicos les hace partir con ventaja con respecto a Occidente en la mayoría de títulos competitivos.

España ha sido denominada en varias ocasiones como “la pequeña Corea” por expertos como Sergi Mesonero. Aunque puede haber algunas similitudes entre ambos países, aún queda mucho camino que recorrer para alcanzar el éxito deportivo de los coreanos.

Precisamente uno de los puntos débiles de la escena española de League of Legends es la escasa importancia que se le concede al cuerpo técnico al diseñar un proyecto. Los dos últimos años han iniciado un cambio de tendencia en este aspecto y, de cara a la primera edición de la Superliga Orange, Giants Gaming pretende incorporar el reputado método de trabajo coreano.

Para ello, los gigantes se han hecho con los servicios de Lee “Miracle” Hyeon-Beom como director de desarrollo de League of Legends. Desconocido por el grueso de la audiencia nacional, el coreano ha sido entrenador jefe de Xenics, Team Dragon Knights y Team EnVyUs.

En su paso por diversas competiciones coreanas, desde la liga principal hasta torneos menores, la Challenger Series NA y la LCS NA, Miracle ha trabajado con jugadores del calibre de Ki “Expect” Dae-han u Oh "Ohq" Gyu-min e incluso llegó a coincidir brevemente en Xenics Storm con Shin "Coco" Jin-yeong, Noh "Arrow" Dong-hyeon o Lee "Piccaboo" Jong-beom.

Si se juzga por los resultados obtenidos por sus equipos, que tampoco han contado con plantillas de primer nivel, el éxito de Miracle es modesto. Su mayor hito ha sido alcanzar los Playoffs norteamericanos con Team EnVyUs y pelear en el regional para acudir al mundial de 2016. No obstante, la experiencia que posee supone un activo muy valioso para un proyecto nacional como el de Giants Only The Brave.

“La liga española está creciendo rápidamente. Después de hablar con Giants Gaming sobre su proyecto a largo plazo estaba muy motivado para trabajar con ellos. Desplazarme a España es otro desafío para mí”, declaró Miracle en exclusiva a Diario AS.

Aunque en la LCS EU los gigantes mostraron su mejor versión el pasado verano, Giants Gaming ha atravesado la peor etapa nacional de su historia en League of Legends. Mientras que en la Temporada 11 la organización se pudo consolar con el triunfo en la Copa El Corte Inglés por la polémica final de la ESL Masters Madrid, la última edición de División de Honor fue un rotundo fracaso. La plantilla contaba con jugadores de renombre y levantó muchas expectativas, pero firmó una fase regular mediocre y no consiguió superar la primera ronda ni en Barcelona Games World ni en Gamergy.

Ante esta crisis, Giants Gaming ha apostado por volver a sus orígenes con un proyecto basado en un potente cuerpo técnico con el que pulir a jugadores con proyección. André Guilhoto, hasta ahora en Portugal con K1ck eSports Club pero que ya pasó por la entidad azulona y cuenta además con mucha experiencia en el mundo del baloncesto, será el nuevo entrenador jefe de Giants Only The Brave y uno de los que más provecho sacará de la llegada de Miracle junto con Aarón Martínez, que pasará a ocupar el puesto de entrenador estratégico.

“Trabajaré con los entrenadores para desarrollar a nuestros equipos y sus jugadores. Planeo implantar una nueva estrategia de trabajo para los equipos y el cuerpo técnico basada en el estilo surcoreano”, dijo el recién llegado.

Miracle no había tenido la oportunidad de ponerse manos a la obra con los equipos cuando Diario AS habló con él a través de David Suh, el intérprete contratado por los gigantes para facilitar la comunicación, pero sí pudo compartir algunas ideas que pretende trasladar a Giants Gaming.

“Siempre guío a los jugadores para que hablen conmigo y les pido que compartan sus ideas. Me parece que su visión es muy importante para saber si estamos en la misma onda”, comentó respecto a su método de entrenamiento.

Esta promoción del debate y la introspección puede ser de gran ayuda para jugadores como Antonio “Th3Antonio” Espinosa, que aunque tiene varias temporadas a sus espaldas no alcanza la mayoría de edad. El antiguo miembro de Pain Gaming es el principal reclamo mediático del nuevo proyecto junto con Federico “Fr3deric” Lizondo, que regresa a la que fue su casa para aportar veteranía en la Grieta del Invocador.

Teóricamente, el “Bandido” debería ser para Guilhoto lo que Xavi Hernández para Pep Guardiola en el FC Barcelona. Poseedor de experiencia en la máxima competición continental, Fr3deric aspira a convertirse en la voz del cuerpo técnico en la Grieta del Invocador. Su labor debería ser sencilla, pues fue el propio jungler quien recomendó al polaco Michael “Roison” Dubiel para la calle central y la dupla lusa formada por el prometedor Amadeu “Minitroupax” Carvalho y el support Joao “Joo” Pereira ya conoce a Guilhoto de su etapa en Portugal.

Miracle asegura que “todos los jugadores que compiten como profesionales tienen talento”, pero es evidente que hay diferencias notables de nivel entre la Superliga Orange y las competiciones a las que el coreano está acostumbrado. Aunque reconoce que la cantidad de información disponible no es tan amplia como la que proporciona la LCK y es consciente de las diferencias culturales interregionales, algo que ya afrontó al desplazarse a Norteamérica, el director de desarrollo confía en su experiencia para adaptar su método a esta nueva coyuntura.

“Nuestra unidad y armonía brillarán conforme avancemos en el largo proyecto. La temporada pasada se probaron diferentes métodos para mejorar al equipo, pero esta temporada será diferente y siempre trabajaremos como un bloque para aportar a los jugadores valiosas lecciones y un entrenamiento de calidad”, aseguró.

Puede que Giants Only The Brave no recupere de la noche a la mañana el trono que una vez le perteneció. Miracle no parece preocupado y, de hecho, aspira a cotas más altas. “Estamos trabajando muy duro para aprender del pasado y empezar a recuperar los viejos y buenos hábitos de Giants Gaming. Nuestro objetivo es hacer que el equipo vuelva a ser popular y exitoso, como los clubes de fútbol españoles”, afirmó.

Habrá que esperar a que comience el circuito competitivo para saber si la apuesta de los gigantes sale rentable o no. En cualquier caso, la primera incorporación de un coreano y la extensión de su método a la escena nacional puede sentar un referente para los próximos años.

South Korea's infrastructure has traditionally been singled out as one of the key factors to explain their dominance in League of Legends. Although there is no doubt that there are Korean players whose ability is indescribable, the culture, discipline and experience of this country in regards to esports gives them an edge over the West in most of the competitive titles.

Spain has been referred several times as "the Little Korea" by experts such as Sergi Mesonero. Although there may be some similarities between the two countries, there is still a long way to go to reach the success of Koreans.

Precisely one of the weak points of the League of Legends Spanish scene is the subpar importance that is granted to the coaching staff when designing a project. The last two years have meant a change to this trend and, in the face of the first edition of the Superliga Orange —the Spanish regional league—, Giants Gaming intends to incorporate the reputed Korean method.

To this end, the giants have signed Lee "Miracle" Hyeon-Beom as the League of Legends Development Director. Unknown by the bulk of the national audience, Miracle has been head coach of Xenics, Team Dragon Knights and Team EnVyUs.

In his way through several Korean competitions, from the major league to minor tournaments, the NA Challenger Series and the NA LCS, Miracle has worked with players of the caliber of Ki "Expect" Dae-han or Oh "Ohq" Gyu-min and even coincided briefly in Xenics Storm with Shin "Coco" Jin-yeong, Noh "Arrow" Dong-hyeon or Lee "Piccaboo" Jong-beom.

If judged by the results obtained by his teams, which have not even had first-class rosters, Miracle's success is modest. His biggest milestone has been reaching the NA LCS Playoffs with Team EnVyUs and fighting in the 2016 Regional Qualifiers for Worlds. Nevertheless, the experience he possesses is a very valuable asset for a national project such as Giants Only The Brave.

"The Spanish league is growing rapidly. After talking to Giants Gaming about their long-term project I was very motivated to work with them. Moving to Spain is another challenge for me", Miracle told to Diario AS.

Although in the EU LCS the giants showed their best version last summer, Giants Gaming has gone through the worst national stage of its history in League of Legends. While in Season 11 the organization was able to console itself with the victory in the Copa El Corte Inglés, the last edition of Division of Honor was a resounding failure. The squad had renowned players and raised many expectations, but ended up with a mediocre regular split and failed to overcome the first round neither in Barcelona Games World nor in Gamergy.

Facing this crisis, Giants Gaming has decided to return to their origins with a project based on a powerful coaching staff to polish players with projection. André Guilhoto, until now in Portugal with K1ck eSports Club but who has already been with Giants previously and also has a lot of experience in the world of basketball, will be the new head coach of the Spanish division of the club and one the ones that will benefit the most from the arrival of Miracle along with Aaron Martinez, that will occupy the position of strategic coach.

"I will work along with the coaches to develop our teams and their players. I plan to implement a new work strategy for the teams and the coaching staff based on the South Korean style", said the newcomer.

Miracle had not had the chance to work with the teams when Diario AS spoke with him through David Suh, the interpreter hired by the giants to facilitate communication, but he was able to share some ideas that he intends to transfer to Giants Gaming.

"I always encourage the players to talk to me and ask them to share their ideas. It seems to me that their vision is very important to know if we are in the same page", he commented on his method of training.

This promotion of debate and introspection can be really helpful to players like Antonio "Th3Antonio" Espinosa, who, although having several seasons behind his back, is still a teenager. The former member of Pain Gaming is the main media claim of the new project along with Federico "Fr3deric" Lizondo, who returns to his home to provide his veteran view to the Summoners Rift.

Theoretically, "El Bandito" should be for Guilhoto what Xavi Hernandez was for Pep Guardiola at FC Barcelona. With experience in the top continental competition, Fr3deric aspires to become the voice of the coaching staff in the Summoners Rift. His work should be simple, because it was the jungler himself who recommended the Polish Michael "Roison" Dubiel for the midlane and the Portuguese duo formed by the promising Amadeu "Minitroupax" Carvalho and the support Joao "Joo" Pereira already knows Guilhoto from their stage in Portugal.

Miracle says that "all players who compete as professionals have talent," but it is clear that there are notable differences in level between the Superliga Orange and the competitions to which the Korean is accustomed. While recognizing that the amount of information available is not as broad as that provided by the LCK and is aware of interregional cultural differences, something that he already faced when moving to North America, the development director relies on his experience to adapt his method to this new conjuncture.

"Our unity and harmony will shine as we move forward in the long term. Last season we tested different methods to improve the team, but this season will be different and we will always work as a block to provide players with valuable lessons and quality training", he said.

Giants Only The Brave may not recover the throne that once belonged to them overnight. Miracle does not seem worried and, in fact, aspires to higher levels. "We are working very hard to learn from the past and begin to regain the good old habits of Giants Gaming. Our goal is to make the team popular and successful again, like the Spanish football clubs", he said.

It will be necessary to wait until the competitive circuit begins to know if the bet of the giants comes out profitable or not. In any case, the first incorporation of a Korean and the extension of his method to the national scene can set a precedent for the next years.
