Man Utd and Standard Liege reach Valdes loan agreement
The Spanish keeper has been offered an escape route out of Old Trafford and will join the Belgian club until the end of the season.
Victor Valdes’ nightmare stint at Old Trafford is over, at least for the time being. The Manchester club announced this afternoon that they have agreed to send the Spanish goalkeeper out on loan to Belgian club Standard Liege until the end of the season.
Having fallen out with coach Louis van Gaal, the man who handed him his debut at Barcelona over a decade ago, Valdes has endured a tough spell on the Old Trafford sidelines since joining the club on a free transfer in January 2015.
He has made just two first-team appearances for the club, the final two games of last season: the first as a substitute in a 1-1 draw against Arsenal and the second a goalless draw away from home against Hull.
Valdes is likely to welcome the opportunity to play elsewhere with open arms, though he may have to win over some of his new teammates. Standard’s Togolese winger Mathieu Dossevi publically questioned the need to bring in a new keeper this week, backing the club’s current number one Guillaume Hubert.
“[Valdes] is obviously a big player, but that isn’t the position where we necessarily need reinforcements,” he said. “Guillaume is doing well for us at the moment, so why replace him?”
