RAYO | ZHANG CHENGDONG
Zhang Chengdong’s Rayo adventure comes to an end
The first Chinese player to play in Spain’s First Division will return home to China, probably to rejoin Beijing Gouan.
The decision has been taken: Zhang Chengdong is set to leave Rayo Vallecano and return to his home country, China. The player will rejoin his old club Beijing Guoan, where he spent three seasons (2013-15) and where he coincided with Spanish coach Gregorio Manzano. However, Manzano is keen to bring the 26-year-old to his current club, Shanghai Shenhua, if Zhang decides to accept.
On Thursday, ‘Dudú’ said his goodbyes to team mates, coaching staff, club employees and the friends he has made during his time in Vallecas, befiore collecting his belongings from the club’s training complex. He was also at the training ground on Wednesday but in the end, didn’t work out alongside the rest of the squad.
Zhang will return to China where he will get more regular playing time that he has been getting under Paco Jémez.
The China international will fly home on Saturday. During the past few weeks, Rayo sponsors Qbao.com, unsuccessfully tried to convince the player to reconsider his decision to return home to gain more minutes – a possibility which was looking unlikely with Rayo facing a fight to remain in the category between now and May.
