San José: “We’re not a dirty side; Messi can’t complain”

“We would have preferred a different opponent, but we’ve been drawn against them and we’re well up for it. It’ll be tough but we have a chance”, he said on Radio 4G.

Athletic Club defender, Mikel San José took to the airwaves to speak on Radio 4G programme A la Contra ahead of the Basque side’s upcoming triple header against Barcelona.

The Cup draw: “We would have preferred a different opponent, but we’ve been drawn against them and we’re well up for it. It’ll be tough but we have a chance”.

What’s more important La Liga or the Cup?: “That’s not an easy one to answer. Points are very important for our league campaign but it would be amazing to reach the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey again. Fingers crossed we can do the job in both competitions”.

Barcelona: “They’re the better team on paper, but we know we’re a side that no one likes to face. If opponents want to beat us, they’re made to suffer first. It gives us confidence knowing that we’ve played excellently against them before. They won’t have enjoyed that”.

Should the Disciplinary Committee step in on the Piqué matter?: “There are professionals who work to solve these kinds of issues. We’ve heard horrendous things be directed at our captain in other stadiums and nothing was done about that. All of us you are subject to abuse get annoyed”.

How to defend against Messi: “With a lot of help and a bit of luck. You can’t just man mark him. He has nothing to complain about because we’re not a particularly dirty team. Obviously we commit fouls, like anyone else, but our intention is to always to win the ball”.

Lift the Cup: “I’m confident we can win the title before I hang up my boots”.
