COPA DEL REY
Copa quarter-finals: Athletic and Barça to cross swords again
Copa del Rey last-eight draw: Valencia-Las Palmas, Sevilla-Mirandés, Athletic-Barcelona and Celta-Atlético.
The draw for the Copa del Rey quarter-finals was held on Friday at the headquarters of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).
In a repeat of last year's final, as well as this season's Supercopa de España, Copa holders Barcelona were paired with Athletic Club.
Atlético Madrid will meet Celta Vigo while the only Segunda División side in the hat, Mirandés, will fight it out for a semi-final place with Sevilla. The last-eight line-up is completed by a tie between Valencia and Las Palmas.
In a break from the practice of recent years, the draw did not also map out the participants’ routes beyond the quarter-final stage, in which the first-leg clashes will be on 20 and 21 January, with the return fixtures played on 27 and 28.
Barça have an away first leg against Athletic before taking the tie back to the Camp Nou, with Valencia travelling to Las Palmas ahead of a second leg at Mestalla. Atlético-Celta opens up in Vigo, while Mirandés visit the Sánchez Pizjuán first before their bid for a last-four spot is decided at their Anduva home stadium.
The draw for the semi-finals will take place on 29 February, with the final – whose venue is yet to be determined - scheduled for 21 May.
