ATLETI | COSTA
Diego Costa on his way back to Simeone's Atlético Madrid?
El Cholo doesn’t want any of his players out despite the signings of Augosto Fernández and Kranevitter, but is reportedly interested in Diego Costa's return.
La Liga leaders Atlético Madrid look like they’re going to catch fire at any moment, but lack the goals to make things comfortable and convincing. They’ve scored 25 in 18, and 9 of those have come from Antoine Griezmann while Jackson Martínez has not repaid Simeone’s persistence: 2 goals so far this campaign. The word in Madrid is that El Cholo is in talks with Diego Costa to persuade him to return to the Calderón from Chelsea.
Atleti have scored eight goals in the last ten minutes this season, leaving it late to secure the points that have put them top, but have created enough chances to make things much more enjoyable for their fervent following.
Enter Diego Costa: a proven finisher who understands the Atleti system better than anyone. ‘A complicated operation’ is how the move has been described, as it would suppose farming out Jackson Martínez to another club - contradicting Simeone’s desire not to lose anyone from his current squad.
It seems things have moved on since September when Costa asked “How am I going to return to Atletico if no one has made me an offer?”. Simeone is said to have made it clear that he wants the striker back and sources close to the Hispano-Brazilian say that Costa is also open to a return to Madrid, but wants assurances that Simeone will still be there next season.
