REFUGEE CRISIS FOOTBALL CONNECTION
Refugee Osama to make coaching debut in San Cugat
The Syrian will hold his first game in charge of Villaverde Boetticher in a friendly in Barcelona on 3 January.
Syrian citizen Osama Abdul Mohsen, who was taken in as a refugee by Spain, will make his Spanish coaching debut in Barcelona, as his side, Getafe-based Villaverde Boetticher face Sant Cugat Esport on 3 January.
Organizing the game has been collaborative effort between CESAL, the Learning Centre for Coaches , Sant Cugat Esports, Sant Cugat local council and Ramon Llull University.
Osama Abdul Mohsen attracted media attention when images surfaced of a Hungarian journalist was filmed kicking a refugee as he attempted to flee the conflict in Syria with his son. Osama, a football manager in Deir Ezzor city, was taken in by Spain but things have been far from ideal since he landed in Europe. Bureaucratic red tape has hampered his efforts to be reunited with his wife and two other sons who are in Turkey as only he and his son have been granted residency in Spain.
The match will take place on Sunday 3 January at the Zona Deportiva Municipal Jaume Tubau, in Sant Cugat del Vallès at 12:30 hours.
