MOURINHO | MANCHESTER UNITED
“Nobody at United has contacted Mourinho”- Jorge Mendes
Social networks were swarming with theories of the imminent departure of Van Gaal but it was but guff and bluff as Mendes confirmed no contact.
Mourinho has only been out of a team since Thursday, but that hasn’t stopped his name being linked with absolutely every job that is or might be opening up any time soon. Specifically with Manchester United. Jorge Mendes came out to calm the hype and spoil the sport saying “Nothing’s happening. No-one knows what might happen in the future, but there’s no deal right now. There hasn’t even been an official approach. There’s no truth in it”, he assured newspaper Globoesporte when asked about Mourinho’s potential move to Manchester United.
In the last few hours the sacking of Van Gaal has become a trending topic with the hashtag #VanGaalOut and #Vangaalsacked, further fuelled by ex-Manchester City and BBC pundit Trevor Sinclair’s Tweet confirming the Dutchman’s departure from the Red Devils. He later Tweeted an apology and a retraction: “Schoolboy error. Left my phone on the table at Christmas dinner. Sorry about my last two Tweets”.
No other English news outlet fell for it though, as rumours swirled around the outcome of the current manager’s meeting with executive vice-president Ed Woodward on Tuesday evening. A meeting that never took place, and the word to the Manchester Evening was that no-one in the club was discussing the continuity of the manager.
Mourinho has headed to Setubal to spend Christmas with his family and will return to London where he will await his next step.
