REAL MADRID 8-0 MALMÖ
Cristiano breaks group goal scoring record with 11
The Real Madrd striker hit four goals against Malmö this evening. He had jointly held the previous record of 9 with Luiz Adriano. Van Nistelrooy scored eight in 04-05.
Cristiano scored four goals against Malmö tonight in the 8-0 win for Real Madrid and became the top scorer in the Champions League group stages in doing so. He had previously held the record of 9 (season 2013-14), jointly with Luiz Adriano (2014-15), but his four goals tonight took him onto a total of 11 goals for the group stage.
Despite Ronaldo's change of position on the pitch and several blank sheets this season, the Portuguese has still managed 21 goals this season in 20 games: 10 in 14 the league, and 11 in six in Europe. In his last three games, Ronaldo has found the net four times (Shakhtar (2), Eibar and Getafe).
However, with the new tactical set-up at Madrid under Rafa Benítez, Ronaldo has failed to score in 10 of 20 matches this season, compared to last season when at the same stage of the season he had scored 28 goals in 19 games, failing to do so on just three occasions.
The Champions League is Ronaldo's favourite hunting ground, and he is the competition's highest scorer with 88. In 2013-14, when Real won the competition, he bagged 17 in total, beating the record of 14 held jointly by Leo Messi (2011-12), Van Nistelrooy (2002-03) and José Altafini (1962-63).
