Aduriz devastates Vallecas

The Athletic striker scored a perfect hat-trick. The first goal came in under a minute. Laporte sent off for the visitors.

There was hardly time to take your seat, or even blink. Athletic needed less than a minute to defuse Rayo. The bomb-disposal officer was Aduriz and his perfect hat-trick (the first in the Liga this season) prove two unanswerable realities: he’s in form (he scored a brace in the Europa League in midweek) and luck is on his side (he went ahead of Luis Suárez in goals scored this season, 20 to 18 for the Uruguayan). Rayo fell into the claws of the lions, who were fired-up. Neither Paco’s changes or numerical superiority could save them from the jaws.

From the very start things looked bad for Rayo, with Aduriz taking just 54 seconds to catch the home defence wide open and skip round Juan Carlos, who came rushing out to try and stop the goal. Mission impossible. The goal was left open and the striker didn’t miss with his left. Raúl García provided the pass and Aduriz scored the fastest goal of the season so far (Athletic have’t scored in under a minute since 09-10, against Osasuna), and the fastest of his career. A moment that defined the rest of the match: sweet for the visitors, bitter for the hosts.

Rayo couldn’t find themselves and Athletic were showing no mercy. Iraizoz stopped a Pablo shot, coming from a Javi Guerra pass, and while Jozabed claimed for a non-existent penalty, Hernández Hernández clearly saw the (light) wrestling of Baena on Raúl García. And Aduriz didn’t miss from the spot, this time with his right foot.

Trashorras tried timidly on a couple of occasions and Raúl García was also on a mission, but the scoreboard didn’t change till the 60th minute. Aduriz (who else?) sealed his perfect hat-trick heading home a ball from Laporte, who was sent off four minutes later for a (soft) foul on Manucho.

Paco had made changes at the break, three man defence, all the artillery up front (Manucho, Lass and Bebé) but the gunpowder wouldn’t light. Rayo created chances, but the best one came in the 90th minute, when Iraizoz saved a Javi Guerra header.

Aduriz shone and his light guided Athletic to all three points against a disorganised Rayo. A win for the lions, Aduriz is the king of the pride.
