ENGLAND - FRANCE

71,000 fans belt out ‘La Marseillaise’ at Wembley

Both sets of supporters remember victims of last week’s attacks in Paris by singing the French national anthem together.

The 71,000 fans at tonight’s friendly between England and France paid a heart-rending tribute to the victims and those affected by last week’s attacks in Paris by singing the French national anthem La Marseillaise together.

Before kick-off at Wembley, players from both teams formed a ring around the centre circle as a minute’s silence was impeccably observed. There was also an ovation from the stands when players hugged on the pitch. The Duke of Cambridge Prince William accompanied Roy Hodgson and Didier Deschamps in laying a floral offering in the colours of the French flag in the memory of those who lost their lives; crowd cards were held up for form a mosaic of the Tricolor. Both sets of fans roared out a rendition of La Marseillaise with the lyrics displayed for the home fans on the stadium’s video screens.

Karim Benzema, who was not with The France squad, wrote on Twitter: “Thank you to all of the people all over the world for showing support for France during this moment of tragedy and sadness”.
