Iker Casillas reached two more career milestones tonight in Alicante. The Spain captain became the first goalkeeper in history to keep 100 clean sheets at international level. In 165 appearances for Spain, he has only been beaten in 65 games.
The Porto keeper also equals former Latvia midfielder Vitālijs Astafjevs’ record* as the European player to have made most appearances at full international level. According to Mister Chip, Casillas also holds the record of call-ups (202), minutes played (13,143) and victories (120).
*FIFA do not recognize two games which Astafjevs played – against Oman Under-23s in 2005 and Angola in 2010.
