Casillas to be awarded the Royal Order of Sports Merit
The honour will make him a dignitary of Spanish sport. Spanish PM will perform the ceremony at La Moncloa on 10 November.
Diario AS understands that Iker Casillas will return to Madrid on Tuesday 10 November to be awarded the Royal Order of Sports Merit. The order, awarded in recognition of distinguished services to sport, will convert Casillas into a dignitary of Spanish sport. The Porto goalkeeper will receive the award from Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy at the Palace of Moncloa in Madrid
Xavi Hernández, who is also due to receive the same order, will receive his at a later date due to his commitments in Qatar with Al-Saad.
Casillas and Xavi will join a illustrious list of Spanish sportsmen and women who have been decorated in the past, including Paco Gento, László Kubala, Alfredo di Stéfano, Severiano Ballesteros, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, Conchita Martínez, Carlos Sainz, and Vicente del Bosque.
Casillas has represented Spain’s national team more than anyone else, having made 164 appearances for his country and captained the team to two European Championships and the World Cup as well as winning 19 major trophies at club level with Real Madrid.
