Florentino Pérez's ACS embroiled in cash-for-contracts probe

A subsidiary of the Real president's construction firm is named in anti-corruption investigation into alleged payments to pro-independence Catalonia party.

According to reports in Spanish broadsheet El País, the ACS group, a construction giant presided over by Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, is one of a number of firms that are currently under investigation by anti-corruption prosecutors and the Civil Guard in a case involving alleged illegal donations to the Catalan political party Convergència, which is led by the pro-independence acting regional premier of Catalonia, Artur Mas.

The alleged donations are suspected of being made in exchange for favourable rulings in the concession of public works contracts. Seven businessmen were detained as part of the ongoing investigation on Thursday. In the case of ACS, the anti-corruption authorities believe they have found indications of alleged illegal payments to secure a 20-millio-euro waste management contract in Olot, Girona, for ACS subsidiary Urbaser.
