CHAMPIONS LEAGUE | PORTO | CASILLAS
Casillas aiming high: “I’m dreaming of San Siro"
The keeper says he’s just one more member of the squad at Porto: “That’s what I said when I was presented. I’ve come here to help”.
Iker Casillas knows the Champions League better than most players but tomorrow he will be making his debut for Porto in the competition, curiously 16 years to the day he made his first appearance in European football’s most prestigious club tournament.
The keeper could equal Xavi Hernández’s appearances record if he plays a part in Wednesday’s opening match against Dinamo Kyiv. “I still don’t know if I’ll be in the line-up tomorrow, so I don’t know if I’ll equal Xavi. Last season, Porto played to a high level and were a match for Bayern in the quarter finals”, Casillas said in today’s press conference.
The Spain captain says he still feels the same rush of excitement as he felt the very first time he played a Champions League game with Real Madrid but insists that the pressure is just the same. “Less pressure with Porto than there was at Real Madrid? Every player feels the pressure – it would be a bad thing if we didn’t. You may as well watch the game on TV if you don’t want to deal with the pressure”, he explained.
Casillas is just as ambitious as ever and won’t settle with making the next round with Porto. “We always want to win and get as far as possible. Emerging from the group stage isn’t the aim – I’d like to get to the final at San Siro, but there will be some very strong teams along the way”, he continued.
The keeper concluded by praising fellow keeper Helton. “He’s fantastic. His experience helps us a lot and we have a prefect relationship – as I do with Raúl Gudiño and João Costa”.
