French sports daily. L’Equipe, yesterday announced that Antoine Griezmann had improved his deal with Atleti and signed a news clause which keeps him at the Calderon until 2019. This information was picked up by many fans, citing that when Greizmann signed from Real Sociedad on July 29, 2014 his initial deal tied him to the club through to 2020. The players agent, Iñaki Ibáñez, upon being questioned, was ambiguous stating: “I don’t have any views of my players contractual situations, nor will I speculate on what is written by the French press”.
Yesterday evening, L’Equipe contacted AS to confirm that they were sure of their information and that Griezmann will be tied to Atletico through to 2019 and has renegotiated an improved deal. This is viewed as an incentive for the French international from Miguel Ángel Gil, to guarantee that Simeone maintains the nucleus of a strong squad and retain all key players. Oblak, Godín, Koke and Óliver have all been subject to interesting offers from big European clubs. During the Summer, PSG, Chelsea and Bayern Munich have shown interest in Griezmann. The French player stated in June: “I’m happy here, I’ve recently arrived at the club and am not going to leave after just one year. I’ve still plenty to learn with Atlético”, added the player. After PSG being rebuffed by Atleti for Griezmann they set their sights on Di María whilst Bayern brought in Douglas Costa, paying 30 million euro for the Brazilian.
Griezmann was signed from Real Sociedad for 30 million euro, he has a buy-out clause of 65 million and earns 3.5 million euro per year. Simeone made a plea to Gil Marín to retain Atleti’s key players in order for his team to be able to compete with the big clubs in La Liga and the club director has completed the task.
