Cerezo: “Arda wanted to play in a bigger team”
The Atleti president said Atleti had had lots of offers for the player, but the player had chosen Barça.
Atleti president Enrique Cerezo said it was the desire of Arda Turan, announced as a new Barcelona player yesterday, to “play in a bigger side” than Atleti, something the executive thinks Arda has achieved with his move to the Catalan side. The deal was signed off by Barcelona’s managing commission, as the club is in process of presidential elections – the new president will have the option of returning Arda (at a cost of 3.4 million euros) if he doesn’t approve of the signing, something “completely legal”, according to Cerezo.
“Atlético are very grateful to Arda Turan for the years he’s been with us and I know he is with us too. His desire was to leave, to play in a bigger team than Atlético Madrid and he’s achieved that”, said Enrique Cerezo.
The Atleti president said Arda Turan was a “magnificent player, a great team-mate and an excellent person”. He also confirmed that Atleti would be heading into the market determined to find a replacement for the Turkish footballing wizard.
