Riera signs three-year deal with Deportivo La Coruña
The Catalan striker has left Wigan and has signed up for three years at Depor. He landed at the airport at midday.
Oriol Riera landed at A Coruña Airport at midday on Tuesday to finalise his move to Deportivo La Coruña on a three-year deal. The club have closed the deal and made it official. The Catalan forward, 28, was on the books at Wigan Athletic, who signed him from Osasuna in 2014 for a fee of €2.5m. Wigan’s descent to the third tier of English football facilitated the transfer and the A Coruña-based club will only pay a small fee for the striker.
Another factor that helped smooth the deal was the commitment of Riera himself to stay at Riazor. He arrived at Depor during the previous January transfer window and the confidence of Víctor Fernández and his successor Víctor Sánchez in him was total. Riera took part in 21 matches (18 starts), racking up 1,513 minutes of action and four goals.
Riera has become Depor’s third new arrival ahead of next season, and the first to bolster their attacking options. The defenders Alejandro Arribas and Fernando Navarro both joined the club from Sevilla. In addition, Depor are in advanced negotiations over the signing of Sidnei (Benfica), while they will fight for Lucas Pérez (PAOK) and Real Madrid’s Lucas Silva. They also intend to sign Burgui on loan, but it is possible that the Real Madrid Castilla player could end up at Espanyol on loan in the deal which will take Lucas Vázquez back to the Bernabéu.
