COPA DEL REY FINAL
10,000 whistles being given out to drown out Spanish anthem
Pro-independence organisations are planning on handing out the whistles before tomorrow’s Copa del Rey final between Athletic and Barcelona.
Organisations in favour of Catalan independence from Spain are planning to hand out 10,000 whistles before tomorrow’s Copa del Rey final between Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona, to be played in the Camp Nou, at the same time as they urge fans to whistle during the Spanish national anthem.
Various pro-independence organisations have called for both the King of Spain and the Spanish national anthem to be whistled, as they are symbols of what they see as an oppressive Spanish state.
Previous editions of the Copa del Rey involving teams from Spanish regions with strong independence movements have seen the King and the anthem whistled.
The pro-independence groups say that whistling the “symbols of Spain” will allow them to show their desire for “national freedom”. “We want to no longer be subjects of the Kingdom of Spain, but simply citizens of an independent Catalonia”, they say.
In total 12 organisation are supporting the initiative, including Catalunya Acció and Sobirania i Progrés.
