Pepe: “Benítez is a good coach”
The defender spoke to Spanish TV channel La Sexta as he left for his holidays.
Pepe spoke to a reporter from Spanish TV channel La Sexta in the airport as the Real Madrid defender headed off on his holidays.
Asked about Benítez, who has been strongly linked with the coaching job at Real Madrid after Ancelotti was sacked, the defender refused to be drawn beyond saying: “He’s not part of Real Madrid. He’s coach at Napoli and I won’t discuss it because it would be disrespectful to Napoli fans and also the club”.
Pepe was happy to talk about the Spanish coach’s abilities though, saying “he’s a good coach, he’s done a good job wherever he’s been, especially at Liverpool”.
The defender was keen to talk about Ancelotti. “He has the affection of everyone. He’s been a great coach for everyone, he’s brought everyone, the club and the fans together. His departure leaves us a little sad, but we need to get on with our lives. He left us with a positive message. We wish him all the best for his coming year, as he said he’s going to rest”.
As to the nature of the positive message, Pepe was happy to spill the beans: “He enjoyed working with us a lot, that we’d been a great group, that we’d given everyone a lot of happiness by winning the Décima. And the day-to-day routine we spent with him was very important, we’ll keep that with us, he knew how to manage the dressing room really well and we’re all happy with his work”.
