Carlos Slim arrives in Asturias to support Real Oviedo
“I hope we can finish off the season well, I’m optimistic, said the Mexican businessman upon his arrival in Asturias.
Whilst Cádiz are in the process of trying to sign a left back to replace the injured Andrés Sánchez, Real Oviedo look for their reinforcements. In the Asturian club’s case an emotional boost. Carlos Slim, the world’s second richest man, arrived earlier in Asturias to lend his support to the local team. Upon arrival, he stated his wish for the weekend: “I hope the end of the season is successful”.
There is a degree of uncertainty with Slim’s relationship with the world of sport. It’s been reported that he’s a fan of baseball and cars, with a great interest in statistics. His first foray into the world of sport confirms that suspicion. “Real Oviedo have been the best of the 80 teams in Segunda B according to results”, analyzed Slim. “Also in terms of playing”, furthered the Mexican with his insight. The magnate arrived in Oviedo with his adviser, Arturo Elías, his son in law and main link with his Grupo Carso company and the local football club.
Slim is expected to stay in Spain for the next ten days. He’ll be at at Sunday’s play-off game at the Tartiere and in Cádiz for the return leg the following week. “We hope to be back in Oviedo the day after to be able to celebrate our promotion”, added Arturo Elias, who is always optimistic when it comes to affairs of the team overseen by coach, Sergio Egea.
Slim bumped into Oviedo fans outside the Hotel Reconquista. “The welcome has been great, very warm, the fans are very enthusiastic. I hope that level of support will be even greater at the Tartiere on Sunday”, added the Mexican. “We’ve been here before and have seen what a great place Asturias is”, he added.
Carlos Slim is the main Real Oviedo shareholder via his Carso company. He got involved with the club in November 2012, as the culmination to the club’s historic share option campaign. Real Oviedo faced extension and the global response from supporters saved the club. 2 million alone was raised via donations from small shareholders. On the last day of the campaign, Carso managed to give the campaign a massive boost with the injection of a further 2 million euro. Their assistance has increased with the exchange of credits to a value of 4,1 million euro in exchange for club shares. With a new share option process currently in place, Slim now holds 58% of the club’s shareholding.
It’s expected that Slim has more interaction with Oviedo fans ahead of Sunday’s game, which will be played at a sold-out Carlos Tartiere stadium. Just 27 hours after the tickets being made available all 30.500 were sold. Oviedo have their added support in Slim.”I’m optimistic”, he stated with a wry grin on arrival. I usually have a good eye. Certainly true when it comes to business.
