ATLÉTICO MADRID | SIMEONE
Simeone to take charge of his 200th Atleti match at Villarreal
'Cholo' faces a special week on the Atlético bench. He celebrates his 200th match in charge, his 45th birthday and he could finish it with his side clinching Champions League qualification.
Diego Simeone will take charge of his 200th game as coach of Atlético Madrid on Wednesday when they face Villarreal. The clash at El Madrigal will be a special one for the Argentine coach. The number places him third in the list of Atleti coaches with most games under their belt, after Luis Aragonés and Ricardo Zamora. ‘Cholo’ has enjoyed his first 199 games at the helm, with a win percentage of 63.31 per cent (126 wins in 199 matches). He has won five titles, the second highest number won by a coach of the club.
One thing that stands out in particular is the defensive strength of Atlético. Of those 199 matches, in 99 Atleti did not concede a goal. That is almost half of the matches that Simeone has guided his men to a clean sheet in. The Liga champions have scored 353 goals and conceded 153, with a difference of 200 goals in the ‘for and against’ column.
Anniversary. Simeone celebrates his 45th birthday on Tuesday. ‘Cholo’ arrived on the Atlético bench in December 2011, although he took charge of his first match in January 2012. Back then, Madrid had been eliminated from the Copa del Rey by Segunda Division B side Albacete and flirted with relegation. Three years later Atlético are close to securing third place in La Liga to qualify for the Champions League, the club’s main objective.
This season Atleti have played 51 official matches (30 wins, 11 draws and ten defeats). They won the Spanish Super Cup, were eliminated from the Copa del Rey by Barça and were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid. Simeone has renewed his contract until 2020.
