Atleti progress every time they draw the first leg 0-0 at home

Atlético have always progressed in European competition when they have tied the first leg 0-0 on home soil. It has happened three times before and they have reached the final each time.

Atlético have always progressed in European competition when they have tied the first leg 0-0 on home soil. It has happened three times and on all three occasions they have won. In two of them they went on to play in the final of the European Cup and the Champions League and in the other they went on to win the Europa League.

The first time it happened was in the 1973-74 season. In the knockout face Atlético took on Galatasaray and they could not get through the Turkish wall. In the second leg they were made to suffer until the end. The winning goal came in extra-time and Atleti went on to the final, where they went down to a late Bayern Munich goal.

In the 2009-10 season Atleti played in the Europa League and in the second round they took on Portuguese side Sporting. The 0-0 from the first leg left it all to play for at the José Alvalade stadium and Kun Agüero scored twice for Quique Flores’ side. Atlético went on to win the competition with victory over Fulham in the final.

Last year, in the semi-finals of the Champions League, Atlético made history at Stamford Bridge. In London Simeone’s side won 3-1 after going behind to a Torres goal. They qualified for the final in Lisbon against Real Madrid.
