SEGUNDA B | REAL UNIÓN 3-2 REAL MADRID CASTILLA

Castilla, without Odegaard, get nothing in Irun

Castilla, without Odegaard, get nothing in Irun

A goal from Aguza and an own goal from Esnaola weren’t enough for the Real Madrid ‘B’ side who went down 3-2 to Real Union. The Norwegian player missed out after taking a knock to the ribs.

Real Madrid Castilla’s bid for a play-off spot at the top of Segunda B is yet more complicated, after Zinedine Zidane’s side were beaten in Irún by Real Unión, who finished a magical week with another win to keep themselves in the fight for top spot in the group with Huesca, after winning the Copa Federación title last Thursday. Jorge Galán was the man of the match today, involved in everything and scoring two goals for Real Unión. The top four sides in each 20 team group in Segunda B (Castilla are in Group II) go into the play-offs. Castilla are in 6th place on 53 points, three off Toledo in 4th spot.

With the wind in their sails after their historic win in the Copa Federación, the team from Irún focused on keeping their winning dynamic going and came out looking to control the ball. Real Madrid Castilla though, with some nice play, curbed the enthusiasm of Aitor Zulaika’s side.

Zidane’s side got stuck into an intense battle for control of the midfield and domination of the ball, with neither team coming out on top. The ball ended up spending time in each box, but there were few clear chances for either side, but Juan Domínguez opened the scoring for the home side, before Real Madrid Castilla’s Aguza equalised. It was down to main man Galán to put Real Unión ahead again, and give them the lead at the break.

In the second half it was clear Castilla were desperate for the win to ensure the playoff spot didn’t get further away from their grasp, and they came out with such desire they soon had a leveller, from a Josu Esnaola own goal.

Zidane’s side seemed more comfortable, without the home side being dominated, but just as it looked like Castilla might snatch it, the goal came at the other end, with the home side’s leading scorer once again making the difference. His 16th goal and all of them with the flavour of the play-offs.
