Mouriño: "Berizzo will continue with us next season"
The Celta president was full of praise for his coach, who has done well during his debut season on the bench at Balaídos.
Carlos Mouriño, president of Celta Vigo, confirmed on Friday that coach Eduardo “Toto” Berizzo will be in charge of the Galician side next season.
“We have no doubt that Berizzo will continue with us next season. He is doing a very good job and is already working on planning signings for next season,” Mouriño said at a press conference.
The president revealed that the South American coach has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave Balaídos at the end of the season, although it does not permit him to join another club.
“Berizzo can go, but he would not be able to coach another club. Therefore we cannot be thinking about another coach,” he added.
Mouriño also used the opportunity to praise Berizzo’s work during his first season in charge of the Vigo club.
“We have fulfilled our objective of staying up without suffering. The team is in a position in which there are no problems, so therefore we have to be satisifed with his performance. The objective has been fulfilled, and comfortably,” he said.
The president revealed that the club have not yet received any offers for the youngster Santi Mina, or any other players in the first-team squad, and made it clear that he does not intend to sell any important players.
“We do not expect any sales because we do not have economic needs like we had in the past,” he added. “We want to maintain the block [of players] because it is very good.
“If we say [there may be] three or four reinforcements, we will return to fulfil, with time to spare, the objective next season.”
Mouriño admitted that the prospect of re-signing striker Iago Aspas is “very difficult” because the player, who is currently on loan at Sevilla, has a salary which is “out of [Celta’s] reach”.
“We would like to bring back Iago and Joselu but we know our limitations. It’s impossible for us to compete with other clubs, so therefore we have decided to strengthen our technical secretariat in order to be able to watch more players and get ahead, like in the case of Bongonda,” he revealed.
