SEVILLA 2 - ATHLETIC 0 | EMERY
Emery’s dream: “To take Sevilla into the Champions League”
“The top flight is really tough because Atlético, Valencia and Villarreal are all at a high level”, the coach said after today’s win.
Unai Emery didn’t hide his ambitions after his Sevilla side recorded a 2-0 win against Athletic Club to keep the pressure on fourth-placed Atlético today. The coach was unequivocal about where Sevilla want to end the season. “Sevilla deserves to be in Europe next season and being close to doing just that is immensely satisfying. We shouldn’t be leaving any other objectives along the way. My ambition continues to be taking Sevilla into the Champions League one day – that’s what gets you recognition and we could do it. Being in Europe is an obligation for us”, he told reporters after the game.
Sevilla impressed against Ernesto Valverde’s side but Emery rejected any claims that it was all one way at the Sánchez Pizjuán. “No game is easy,” he said. “We knew the difficulties we would be facing with the game starting at a very high pace and with Athletic attempting to take control of the game as early as possible. They’re a side who don’t concede many goals. We managed to impose our authority on the game and dictate the rhythm then score two goals. We wanted to avoid being put under pressure by them and dominate the game in terms of our positioning out on the field. We managed to do that in spells. Today, we saw a great Athletic side take on a great Sevilla side – one which becomes even stronger when we’re at home. They were also affected by Muniain’s injury”.
