Lopetegui leaves Danilo in the stands against Marítimo
The full-back travelled with the squad to Madeira but the coach preferred to leave him out as Porto crashed out of the Cup.
Porto manager Julen Lopetegui decided to make Danilo tonight’s League Cup semi-final tie against CS Marítimo from the stands. Lopetegui took a 21-man squad, including three goalkeepers, to Madeira – and some players flew directly to the island after completing international commitments with the national teams. That wasn’t the case with Danilo, who starred in Brazil’s games against France and Chile. The defender was informed that he wouldn’t be involved in this evening’s game an hour before kick-off.
It’s unusual that Lopetegui would include the player for the trip then leave him out – especially seeing as it meant exposing Danilo to the media just hours after his transfer to Real Madrid was made official. Until tonight, Porto had been involved in three competitions – the league, league cup and Champions League but Lopetegui decided to rest one of his star players for the game, which Porto lost 2-1, eliminating them from the competition.
