Pepe's ordeal: He could be out through injury for a month
Against Atleti in the cup he suffered a rib injury. The Madrid medical team are treating it with caution and he could be sidelined for a month.
The injury suffered by Pepe in the cup derby clash with Atlético was pure misfortune. An unusual injury which is a painful one. In fact, the medical team are being very cautious and the player may well be out of action for a month, which would see him miss the league derby against Atlético at the Calderón on February 7.
According to what AS knows, the Portuguese centre-back has been in discomfort and is resting. A blow to the ribs is discomforting and the recovery is usually slow. It needs minimum movement and those around Pepe are concerned that he is not able to help the team in such a crucial part of the season.
Pepe was injured in the derby at the Bernabeu when he clashed with Raúl García in competing for a cross from Koke after 56 minutes. He struggled to get up and noticed pain in his rib area before requesting to be substituted, for Raphael Varane, and going into the locker room. He could hardly breathe.
On the same night he had to go to the Sanitas-La Moraleja hospital, where he was diagnosed with a “strong rib contusion”. Further tests were more conclusive and Pepe found out he had a muscle tear in his right rib area. The only solution is patience. He will recover at home with rest but it will be a slow recovery. A simple knock to the same area could further delay his recovery. His objective? To be ready for the clash against Schalke on February 18. Get well soon.
