'Alcorconazo' President Esteban Márquez passes away
Esteban Márquez Ponce was Alcorcón President from 1998 to 2010 during which time the team gained promotion to the Liga Adelante.
Former Alcorcón President Esteban Márquez Ponce passed away on Thursday, aged 77. Born in Tomelloso, Ciudad Real, Márquez spent most of his life in Alcorcón. In February 1998 he took over as President of AD Alcorcón and although he couldn’t avoid the team being relegated to the Third Division during the first months of his mandate, he set a deadline of three years to steer the side back into the Segunda B – which he managed twice.
During his final year as club president, Márquez witnessed two of the most historic events in the club’s history – the famous ‘Alcorconazo’ when the team knocked Real Madrid out of the Copa del Rey and they subsequent promotion to the Liga Adelante under coach Juan Antonio Anquela. The Madrid-based club remembered Márquez as “a friendly, approachable man who worked hard to turn Alcorcón into a great club and thanks to his management, the team has been able to enjoy playing in Spain’s second tier”.
