Torres, Shaqiri and Podolski, options for the attack
Atlético will sign someone to bolster their attack before the end of January. Simeone is happy with Mandzukic but doesn’t want to overplay the Croatia international.
Diego Simeone has told Atlético’s sports management team that his side has to be more productive in front of goal. In recent days, club officials have intensified their search for a striker to strengthen Atlético’s attack, a player who can partner Mandzukic or play instead of him. The Croatia international has had little rest and Atleti’s sports management team are looking for a player to help ease the goalscoring burden on the striker. The Spanish capital club have switched their focus: at first they were on the hunt for a quality playmaker, but now they want another striker.
Atlético came into contact with Xherdan Shaqiri, the Bayern Munich player, but Cholo now intends to sign a more offensive player. Several names have been linked with Atlético, including Fernando Torres, Lukas Podolski and Bruma. In short, the Madrid club will soon take a decision on it and Alessio Cerci’s future at the club is also under consideration. Another Atleti forward, Raúl Jiménez, has had little first-team action under Cholo too, but the Mexican has stated that he is very happy at the club and will fight to secure more first-team minutes. One member of Atlético’s squad (possibly Cerci) will leave and a forward will arrive in his stead, a player capable of fulfilling the role that David Villa did last season. With the ability to score more goals, Atletico will feel capable of achieving anything.
PLAYERS OF INTEREST
Torres for Cerci, they say in Italy
In Italy they claim that Cerci could go to Milan and that the deal could include Fernando Torres. ‘El Niño’ is a player who is well-liked by Simeone and the coach would look favourably upon the Spaniard’s return to Atlético. However, his salary could be a problem.
Contact with Shaqiri
Andrea Berta contacted the Switzerland international through his brother and agent Erdin Shaqiri. He is under contract until 2016 and Simeone has, for the time-being, halted the move to bring him to Madrid. Atleti’s sports management team are fond of his speed with the ball.
Podolski wants to leave in January
Lukas Podolski, the Germany forward, would consider leaving Arsenal in the January transfer market. He has a contract at the Emirates until 2016 and would command a fee of 20m euros. The deal is feasible as Arsenal are admirers of Alessio Cerci.
