"In the first half we were equal to or better than Barcelona"
Espanyol coach Sergio admits he couldn't pick his players up after conceding on the stroke of half time. "After the third goal the game was over."
Espanyol coach Sergio González expressed his "sadness" over the result of the Catalan derby and admitted he had not been able to "mentally prepare" his side during the break, after Barcelona had equalized.
Result: "I am very sad over the result, to have conceded five goals. Firstly for the players and also for the fans. Losing 5-1 leaves you with few excuses. In the first half we were equal to or even better than Barcelona, we could have gone in at the break 2-0 up but we came into the dressing room angry and I couldn't find a way to instil in the players how to recover from it. We went out with our heads down and after the third goal the game was over."
Conclusions: "From the first half we can draw no end of positive conclusions. The team worked their socks off, defended well, attacked up the wings, created chances... in the second half there was little positive to take away. I couldn't mentally prepare the players after the equalizer."
Key to the game: "We all know what Messi is and what he signifies. He will be a legend in the game and for Barcelona it is a luxury to have a player like him."
Half time: "If I had known what I did wrong, I would have done it differently. The talk was normal; I told them to forget the goal. The way we played in the first half the team didn't deserve to concede that goal. We'll be annoyed tomorrow."
