Nadal loses in Basel and brings curtain down on season
World number three, suffering from appendicitis, beaten by 17-year-old Coric and announces he will not compete again this year.
Rafael Nadal suffered a shock defeat to 17-year-old Borna Coric at the Swiss Indoors in Basel on Friday. The world number three, playing through a bout of appendicitis this week, said after the match that he has withdrawn from the Paris Masters and the ATP Tour Finals in London.
Coric, the world number 124 who was junior world number one last season, beat Nadal 6-2, 7-6 after carving out a 5-0 lead in the first set and will go on to face David Goffin in the semi-finals after the Belgian defeated Milos Raonic in three sets.
After the match, Nadal confirmed that he will not compete again this year: “I am going to have surgery for appendicitis after this tournament and I will not play in Paris or at the Tour Finals,” he said in a press conference. “At the moment I am not able to compete. I will return in 2015; I am a player who aspires to win titles and not just play in quarter-finals. I knew that I would lose in Basel, although I didn’t know exactly when. Next week I will be working on my back and, potentially, I will go for surgery on November 3 at the latest.”
However, Nadal did state that he will defend his title at the Rio Open in February. “I am very happy to have the opportunity to return to the Rio Open next year. Playing at the inaugural event was an incredible experience and the support of the crowd was incomparable,” he said in a statement released by tournament organizer IMX.
