Koke: "Cristiano Ronaldo is an athlete, but Messi is God"
The Atlético Madrid midfielder spoke on Onda Cero about the best footballers on the planet and confessed “ultimately, I’d pick Messi”.
Jorge Resurrección ‘Koke’, the Atlético Madrid midfielder, believes Cristiano Ronaldo and Leo Messi are both “great footballers”, but clarified his statement by labelling the Portuguese as “an athlete” and the Argentinian as “God”. Meanwhile, he discussed the offer he received from Barcelona last summer, explaining that he could not leave La Liga champions Atlético during their “finest moment”.
“It´s complicated, the two of them are great footballers. Cristiano is an athlete, and Messi is God – you see him on the pitch and he is spectacular,” Koke opined on Onda Cero. “It is very difficult to score and I would always want him in my team, as I would with Cristiano, but I think that I would pick Messi.”
Discussing his decision to stay at Atlético, the Spain international says his choice must be respected.
“I must be grateful for the interest from Barcelona and other teams, but I am happy because I wanted to be here,” he said.
“I have been here all my life and last summer was not the moment to leave – we are winning everything, the club is growing and we are growing as footballers. Why would I want to leave during Atlético Madrid´s finest moment?”
Regarding his former Atlético team-mate Diego Costa´s adaptation to the national team, Koke recalled La Roja´s “philosophy of touch” but also admits the players should “search for the spaces for him to take advantage of”.
He added: “He tells me that he wants to score with the national team. So far it hasn´t happened for him, but when he scores the first many more will follow.
“He´s got goals in him and he fits well with the team. In England he is scoring all the time - it was a good decision for him to go there.
“Diego has to come to play with us and we have to find him when he has space and breaks forward, because with his movements he can meet the ball when he is in a position to score.”
Finally, Koke admitted his admiration for Xavi Hernández and said “I hope I can achieve half as much as him”.
He said: “Xavi has been everything in the national team. He has won everything at Barcelona and here. He has been ‘top’. I still have a long way to go, a lot of work to do.
“But in the end, Xavi is going to be Xavi, and Koke is going to be Koke.”
