2014 WORLD CUP BRAZIL | BRAZIL 1 - GERMANY 7
“I’m to blame,” says Scolari
The Brazil coach held himself responsible for the crushing 7-1 defeat which left their World Cup dream in tatters.
Felipao Scolari faced the media after watching his side slump to a 7-1 thrashing in Tuesday’s World Cup semi-final and told reporters that he alone is to blame for the defeat.
How can you explain such a humiliating defeat? “They had the quality to score four goals in six minutes. I ask our fans for forgiveness for the result, we won’t reach the final but we wuill continue working and we’ll play for third place in Brasilia on Saturday. I thank the fans for the support they have given us – even when we were losing by five or six goals”.
Who is responsible for this defeat? “I’m responsible for what the team does out on the pitch – and who is to blame for this result. Some might share the blame between the team but the person who is to blame is Scolari”.
Will you continue as Brazil coach? “I’m in no doubt about that, I did what I thought was the correct thing to do [for this game]. It’s a catastrophic, ugly defeat – the worst ever, but we are looking ahead to the future. In 2002 we won, today we lost. I was the one who chose the team. We shouldn’t forget that we have a game on Saturday to get through”.
Not making substitutions in the first half: “You can’t start taking players of when you’ve let in four goals in six minutes. It’s not normal to concede for in six minutes but it can happen. Even Germany couldn’t believe what was happening. Changing one or two players wouldn’t have made any difference”.
