"Signing Neymar has affected the club's financial stability"
Barça’s vice-president Carles Vilarrubí has said that there was an agreement for Neymar to arrive in 2014, but it was brought forward by "pressure from another club".
Barcelona’s vice-president of the institutional area, Carles Vilarrubí, has acknowledged that taking Neymar to the Camp Nou a year earlier than planned has affected the Blaugrana’s “financial stability”.
Speaking at the launch of a book exploring the impact of the economic crisis on the football world, Vilarrubí said that Barcelona had reached a pre-agreement for Neymar to arrive at the Catalan club in summer 2014, but that “pressure from another club” to secure the ex-Santos player’s services saw the transfer brought forward.
“The club signed a pre-agreement for him [Neymar] to join the following season ,” he said. “Pressure from another club led us to sign him a year earlier. This fact has affected the club's financial stability.”
Referring to the interference of “another club” in the negotiations to take the Brazil international to Barça, Vilarrubí explained that “surrounding pressure” sometimes causes clubs to make decisions due to “not necessarily sporting” circumstances.
