"Courtois will play if there's an agreement with Chelsea"
Atlético Madrid president Enrique Cerezo said: "We’re gentlemen and we observe everything we sign. If he doesn’t play, Aranzubia will come in."
Atlético Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has insisted that the Rojiblancos still do not know whether Thibaut Courtois will be able to play against Chelsea in the sides’ upcoming Champions League semi-final.
“I don’t know how many times I’ve repeated it,” Cerezo told reporters after the directors’ lunch ahead of Atlético’s Liga BBVA match against Getafe on Sunday. “Courtois is Chelsea’s player. We’re trying to get him on loan for another season. I think he’ll end up playing against them, but only if we reach an agreement with Chelsea. We’re gentlemen and we observe everything we sign.”
Asked if there could be UEFA consequences in the wake of the body’s press release stating that such clauses are “null, void and unenforceable”, the Atlético chief said: “I don’t know. I think he’ll play, but with an agreement between both parties. If he doesn’t play, [Daniel] Aranzubia will come in.”
Cerezo added: “We want to be in Lisbon. We’ll do everything we can to do that. But I don’t see any favourites, neither in Europe nor in La Liga.”
