West Brom appoint Pepe Mel as new head coach

Mel takes charge on an 18-month deal. The ex-Betis coach will work alongside assistant head coach Keith Downing and goalkeeper coach Dean Kiely.

Pepe Mel has been appointed as the new head coach of West Bromwich Albion, the Premier League club has confirmed.

The former Real Betis coach, who parted company with the Liga BBVA club in December, has been handed an 18-month deal and takes over from Keith Downing, who had been in temporary charge since the sacking of Steve Clark just under a month ago.

Mel, who had initially turned down the chance to take charge at the Hawthorns, will work alongside assistant head coach Downing and goalkeeper coach Dean Kiely.

The 50-year-old becomes the fourth Spaniard to coach a Premier League club, following in the footsteps of Roberto Martínez, Rafa Benítez and Juande Ramos.
