2014 WORLD CUP | SPAIN
"We’re banking on Diego Costa; and he wants to be with us"
“He’s not a typical, out-and-out centre-forward; he’s known for his ability to shake off defenders. He would be very useful for us”.
After announcing the 23 players who will form part of his squad for the final two 2014 World Cup qualifiers in Group 1, Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque reviewed some of the current issues concerning the national team.
Diego Costa: “It’s not that we’ve run out of time, it’s a sporting matter. The Federation began the legal procedure as quickly as they could and if anyone’s to blame, it’s the coaches as we didn’t have time beforehand. He’s not a typical, out-and-out centre-forward; he’s different and he complements those around him. He has been developing his game in Spain since he was 18 and was a very complete player when he joined Atlético de Madrid. He could be very useful for us for his ability to shake off defenders. We needed to put ourselves in contact with him to deal with the issue; we had a very pleasant chat with him – he’ a very noble, approachable and friendly guy – not at all like the aggressive Diego Costa we see out on the pitch. We told him that we were interested in calling him for Spain and he said that he wanted to join us. But until he has played for us, he won’t close the door entirely on Brazil. We know how the world works – nobody chooses where they are born but he has the requisites to play for our national team”.
Casillas and 2014 World Cup Brazil: “The positive side of playing a few games is that he will be fresh and in form in time for the tournament. We’ll make our decisions as we get nearer the time, as always, using common sense”.
Atlético on a roll: “They are doing extremely well but unfortunately, we can’t call all of them. We haven’t got anything against any club, we treat everyone the same”.
Juanfran’s recall: “He was with us for the first match against France and if he hasn’t featured since then it’s because we have decided to bring in younger players like Azpilicueta and Montoya even though they haven’t played. We need alternatives in the right-back position – I thought Koke did superbly when we deployed him at right-back. All of the players who are in the list have earned their place on their own merits, where we decide to field them”.
Bringing in Under-21 players: “With the politics we adhere to, it’s not that we will start dipping into the Under-21 side whenever we have a player out injured or suspended. We try to function like a club and we count on our youth players and bring them in accordingly when the time is right. Koke and Alberto Moreno are perfect examples of that. Alberto Moreno is a dynamic player and we’ve received very good reports about him”.
